European leaders criticized Trump’s decision to impose 30% tariffs on EU goods and are preparing for a tough response

The US President Donald Trump’s announcement of his intention to introduce 30 percent tariffs on imports from the European Union countries from August 1 caused a wave of harsh criticism from the leaders of the leading EU states. Most of them consider such actions to be unjustified and dangerous for global trade, and also declare their support for the European Commission in the preparation of potential countermeasures.

French President Emmanuel Macron stated, that France “strongly disapproves” of the White House’s decision. According to him, it is extremely important now that the European Commission demonstrates its readiness to protect the economic interests of the European Union and activates the preparation of appropriate measures in response. Macron emphasized that France fully supports the European Commission in the negotiations, which must be strengthened in order to reach a mutually acceptable agreement by August 1.

Prime Minister of Spain Pedro Sanchez emphasizedthat Madrid supports the European Commission in its negotiating course. He noted that the openness of economies and trade create well-being, and unjustified restrictions destroy this well-being. Sánchez emphasized that the European Union remains the largest trade union in the world and must use its weight to achieve fair solutions.

The Prime Minister of Ireland, Michal Martin, reminded that the EU continues to prefer the peaceful resolution of trade disputes, rather than the escalation of conflicts. For him in words, despite the fact that the European Union was aware of the possibility of tough steps on the part of the US, its position remains unchanged: avoidance of escalation through agreements. He emphasized that the US and the EU should be allies, not rivals, as both sides will benefit from the partnership.

Kristersson warned that in the event of a trade war, American consumers will suffer the biggest losses. He also emphasized that Sweden consistently stands for free international trade and cooperation.

It will be recalled that on July 12, Donald Trump announced the introduction of 30 percent tariffs on goods from EU countries and Mexico, starting in August.
