Germany has begun production of missiles for the Patriot air defense system, which may be transferred to Ukraine in the future

The Federal Republic of Germany has launched its own line for the production of surface-to-air missiles for Patriot anti-aircraft missile systems, which allows it to continue transferring these munitions to Ukraine without coordination with the US government. About it in Kyiv reported Major General Christian Freuding is the coordinator of the support staff for Ukraine at the Ministry of Defense of Germany.
During the briefing, he confirmed that it is about independent European production, deployed without the involvement of the American industrial base. According to Freuding, the first batches of missiles made in Germany will arrive in 2026-2027.
In response to a clarifying question regarding the further supply of these missiles to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Freuding emphasized: since production is independent, Germany is able to independently make decisions on the transfer of weapons.
It will be recalled that on July 10, Chancellor of Germany Friedrich Merz announced the readiness of the government to purchase additional American Patriot systems and transfer them to Ukraine.
Ukraine has repeatedly stated the critical need for these air defense systems. On April 14, Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Ukraine is ready to purchase 10 Patriot systems worth $15 billion, and expressed hope that some European countries would participate in financing the purchase.
On May 22, the head of state noted that Washington’s official response to the Ukrainian proposal has not yet been provided. At the beginning of July, in a conversation with Donald Trump, Zelensky raised the issue of supplying both the systems themselves and the missiles to them, and received assurances of support. In addition, back in December 2024, in an interview with Le Parisien, Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine is asking the US for a license to manufacture the Patriot and has not yet received any confirmation. Then he also stated that Ukraine needs at least 10-12 such systems.
