The conflict surrounding the liquidation of the UDO Institute: students protest, the Cabinet of Ministers will consider the proposal of the Ministry of Education and Culture

The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine initiated the liquidation of the Institute of the State Security Administration of Ukraine (UDO). The draft of the relevant order has already been sent to the Cabinet of Ministers for consideration. However, this decision caused sharp disagreement among the students of the Institute, who oppose its closure, writes “UP. Life”.

The students, having secured the support of people’s deputies Yulia Hryshina and Solomiya Bobrovska, demand to stop the liquidation process. They claim that the decision was made without taking into account their opinion and has no legal basis.

Reasons for liquidation: the position of the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Ministry of Education and Culture

As it became known, on July 1, 2024, students of the Institute received a notification about the liquidation of their educational institution through Google Classroom. In the explanatory note to the draft order of the Cabinet of Ministers, the decision is motivated by the fact that the Institute violated the legislation in the field of higher education. Students were offered to transfer to other educational institutions, in particular to the Academy of the Security Service of Ukraine.

At the same time, the new head of the UDO, Oleksiy Morozov, was unable to clearly explain the reasons for the Institute’s liquidation at the meeting of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on National Security, Defense and Intelligence. People’s deputy Solomiya Bobrovska stated that the UDO board does not have the authority to make such a decision, and assumed that internal interests aimed at transforming the educational institution into a different structure are behind it.

Students’ protest and their demands

The students of the Institute do not agree with such a decision and consider it unfounded. They emphasize the uniqueness of the Institute’s educational programs, which, according to them, have no analogues in Ukraine.

“This decision is completely groundless, and we demand an open dialogue. Our right to study at the chosen institution must be taken into account.”, – said one of the students in a comment for “UP. Life.

The students appealed to the deputies and the Ministry of Education to intervene in the situation and stop the liquidation process. Yulia Hryshina, head of the subcommittee on higher education, supported the students and promised to do everything possible to stop this process.

The Committee of the Verkhovna Rada recommended reconsidering the decision to liquidate the Institute, but the UDO continues to take measures to close it. Currently, the liquidation project is under consideration by the Cabinet of Ministers, and the final decision should be made in the near future.
