The US military sees artificial intelligence (AI) as a key component of the future nuclear command, control and communications (NC3) system. About this informs The War Zone.

During the Air Force Association’s 2025 Warfare Symposium, representatives of the US Air Force and US Space Force said that AI can significantly speed up the decision-making cycle and ensure the security of the transmission of orders. At the same time, the final decision on the use of nuclear weapons will always remain with man.

Director of Strategic Plans for the U.S. Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC), Major General Ty Neumann, emphasized that without the implementation of AI, the United States could lose its strategic competitive edge.

«If we don’t think about AI and we don’t consider it, we’re going to lose, and I’m not interested in losing. AI has to be part of what the next generation NC3 architecture looks like. We have to be smart about how we use this technology.» — he emphasized.

According to the military, artificial intelligence can play a key role in choosing the optimal route for the transmission of commands, speeding up the analysis of intelligence information, as well as in predicting possible technical failures in the NC3 system.
