As a result of the war in Ukraine, 2,800 schools and kindergartens were destroyed or damaged

13% of all buildings of educational institutions in Ukraine were damaged and destroyed as a result of hostilities. These are schools, kindergartens, universities, extracurricular education institutions, etc. In total, 380 objects were destroyed, that is, they are no longer subject to restoration. More than 3,400 schools, kindergartens and other institutions were damaged.
Hundreds of buildings are no longer subject to restoration
The largest number of educational buildings were destroyed in the Donetsk, Kharkiv and Kherson regions. In particular, 173 buildings of schools and other educational institutions were completely destroyed in Donetsk region. 631 buildings in the region were damaged. There are 51 destroyed and 579 damaged educational institutions in Kharkiv region, and 51 destroyed and 296 damaged premises of educational institutions in Kherson region. Such data is provided by the Ministry of Education of Ukraine.

The Office of the Prosecutor General cites somewhat smaller numbers. According to the prosecutor’s office, almost 2.9 thousand buildings of educational institutions are considered to have been destroyed or damaged as a result of hostilities since February 2022.
“Why are the statistics of the ministry and the prosecutor’s office so different? It is most likely because each structure has its own method of calculation. It should be remembered that the Prosecutor General’s Office has its own peculiarities in the investigation of criminal proceedings, and this can also affect the indicators of the final statistics. But we must state that between national structures have not established a connection. And this may make it difficult to defend the interests of Ukraine in front of partners who are ready to help with recovery,” he notes Government Padun, analyst of the Ukrainian Helsinki Union on Human Rights.
How much will it cost to restore schools?
The results of the calculations of the Kyiv School of Economics, which were published at the beginning of the year, showed that as a result of the destruction caused to schools, kindergartens, universities and other educational institutions, Ukraine suffered losses in the amount of at least 6.8 billion dollars.
Ukraine’s international partners promise to be involved in the restoration of educational institutions. For example, Lithuania is already implementing the project “Future School for Ukraine”, within which several typical but adaptive projects for the construction of educational institutions will be created.
In addition, a school in Borodyanka and a kindergarten in Irpen have already been rebuilt at the expense of Lithuania. The construction of a shelter school in the Mykolaiv region is ongoing.
We will remind, this year from the state budget allocated 2.5 billion hryvnias for the arrangement of shelters in schools.
