During the election campaign, Donald Trump promised to quickly end the war in Ukraine, lower prices and support the economy with tariffs. However, he now admits that realizing these promises turned out to be much more difficult, informs The Hill. During the first press conference after the election, Trump said that stopping the war in Ukraine is more difficult than reducing tensions in the Middle East. According to him, the resolution of the conflict depends on the readiness of Ukraine and Russia to compromise. In addition, in an interview with the «Meet the Press» program, he admitted that he could not guarantee that the tariffs would not cause an increase in consumer prices. And in a conversation with «Time» during the presentation of the «Man of the Year» award, Trump noted that it is difficult to reduce the cost of food if prices have already increased. «While Democrats and critics have accused Trump of lowering expectations or signaling that he is breaking campaign promises, his team and allies say the president is moving from campaign rhetoric to an awareness of the complexities of governing.» — the message says. We will remind that during the meeting with Emmanuel Macron and Volodymyr Zelensky in Paris, Trump expressed his desire to start negotiations for a quick end to the war.

The Prime Minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico, addressed the leadership of the European Union with an open letter in which complained on the decision of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi to stop the transit of Russian gas after 2025. «President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky announced that after January 1, 2025, Ukraine will not provide gas transit through its territory to the Slovak Republic and for other consumers in Western Europe «unilaterally, without any open consultations with the bodies of the European Union or interested parties member states», — the letter says. According to Fitso, Ukraine was offered alternative routes for gas transit, but these proposals were also rejected. He emphasized that Zelenskyi’s decision could have serious negative consequences for the European economy and EU efforts aimed at competitiveness in the global context. The Prime Minister also stated that the approach of the European Commission and most of the member states to this issue is unclear. He suggested that the economic consequences of stopping the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine were either underestimated, or assessed only ideologically, without proper professional analysis. Fico referred to the expert assessments of the Slovak company SPP, which indicate a possible increase in gas prices in Slovakia and on European markets in the event of transit termination. At the end of his letter, he called on EU leaders to immediately pay attention to this situation, giving it a high priority.

Russian smugglers have found a way to deliver luxury cars to Russia from EU countries, despite the sanctions imposed due to the invasion of Ukraine. They charge significant amounts for such services, satisfying the demand of wealthy clients. About this informs Financial Times. At least five Russian companies are involved in the illegal importation of large-engine cars that fall under the EU’s 2022 ban on luxury goods exports to Russia. For example, on the website «Autoimport» there was an announcement for the sale of a BMW 530 d M Sport for 7.2 million rubles (about $68,200). A representative of the German car dealer confirmed that this car was sold in Germany for 31,900 euros. It also found more than 50 ads on Auto.ru for the sale of luxury cars, which are believed to come from 25 different German car dealerships. The average markup for such vehicles is about 19,000 euros. After the EU in July 2022 tightened restrictions on the import of luxury goods to Belarus, smugglers developed alternative routes. Now cars are delivered to Russia via Turkey, Georgia or even South Korea. According to the representative of «Avtoimport», transportation through South Korea has become a cheaper and faster option. European officials acknowledge the problem of luxury car smuggling, but for now the priority is to combat sanctions evasion involving dual-use goods that can be used for military purposes.
