60% of IDPs spend more than half of their income on housing: survey

According to the results poll, conducted by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), 60% of internally displaced persons (IDPs) are forced to spend more than half of their family income on housing rent. The average amount they pay together with utilities is about 8,500 hryvnias per month.
A large number of displaced people, namely 38%, reported that housing costs exceed 70% of their income. At the same time, the average income of the interviewed IDPs is only 13,561 hryvnias.
Regarding living conditions, the majority of displaced persons (53%) rent apartments, 33% live in private houses, 8% in rooms, and another 5% live in temporary housing.
For comparison, those who did not change their place of residence earn an average of 20,000 hryvnias per month. Although their rent costs also amount to UAH 8,500, 50% of such respondents reported that they spend more than half of their income on housing.
It is worth noting that the Prime Minister of Ukraine, Denys Shmyhal, previously stated that no increase in assistance to displaced persons is planned in 2025. However, the state is considering the possibility of providing housing rental subsidies.
The survey that formed the basis of this data is the 17th round of research conducted by IOM. It was held from July 13 to August 12, 2024 by the method of telephone interviews. The sample included 40,000 randomly selected respondents, among whom 1,488 migrants, 1,188 returnees, and 1,800 local residents were interviewed in detail. The survey covered all regions of Ukraine, with the exception of temporarily occupied territories.
