The incident occurred at a power plant in the city of Moss Landing, California. As a result, the Monterey County Department of Emergency Response has issued evacuation orders for eight areas. Residents were advised to close windows and doors and turn off ventilation systems.
Tens of thousands of lithium batteries are located at the facility, which is one of the largest battery power plants in the world. North County Fire Departments are actively on scene trying to contain the fire.
“The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, but an investigation will begin once the fire is extinguished.” – said the fire service.
The Texas-based power plant completed its final phase of building energy storage in 2023 as part of California’s efforts to bolster its grid with clean energy. It stores 750 megawatts, enough to power approximately 562,000 homes for four hours.
