A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 occurred in Myanmar and Thailand. A 30-story building collapsed in Bangkok, killing at least three people and trapping dozens under the rubble. In the city of Mandalay in Myanmar, the death toll rose to 13, and more than 200 people were injured. informs The Guardian.
The earthquake struck near Mandalay — Myanmar’s second-largest city with a population of more than a million — at about 12:50 p.m. local time. After 12 minutes, an aftershock of magnitude 6.4 occurred. Tremors were also felt in Bangkok and in the Chinese province of Yunnan.
A 30-story unfinished building collapsed in the capital of Thailand. One person died, about 50 others were injured. According to the National Institute of Emergency Medicine (NIEM), dozens of people may remain under the debris. Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra declared a state of emergency in Bangkok. The city’s governor, Chadchart Sittipunt, said that a number of buildings were damaged, but the extent of the damage was still being determined.
The tremors caused panic among the residents of Bangkok – people ran en masse from high-rise buildings, hotels and offices. According to eyewitnesses, water from pools on the roofs of high-rise buildings overflowed over the edges.
According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of the earthquake was located near Mandalay, at a depth of only 10 kilometers.

There have been no official reports of large-scale destruction in Myanmar. However, in the capital Naypyidaw, the National Museum suffered from the tremors – debris fell from the ceiling, and visitors left the building in panic.
Eyewitnesses talk about destroyed buildings in various settlements. One of the witnesses reported the collapse of a five-story building in Mandalay. In Yangon, located about 600 km from the epicenter, residents also ran out of their homes. In the city, mobile communication disappeared for a certain time, which was later restored. Also, in Mandalay, the earthquake caused a road bridge over the Irrawaddy River to partially fall into the water, raising a cloud of dust.
