A thousand days of war: numbers that speak for themselves

Today is a sad date — 1,000 days since the start of the full-scale invasion of Russia.

A thousand sleepless nights and anxious mornings. A thousand days of worries for the dearest. Thousands of air alarms.

Thousands of lost lives and shattered dreams. Thousands of windows that no longer look at the world, and houses that have lost their inhabitants. Thousands of trials that changed us forever.

But at the same time – a thousand dawns that come after the darkest night. Thousands of warm hugs and words of support. Thousands of new meetings, acquaintances and safe corners created by joint efforts. A thousand proofs that even in the most difficult times humanity and strength of spirit win.

Now is not the time for celebrations. The war continues… That’s why our infographic contains only numbers that speak for themselves.

People and territories

Refugees and displaced persons

The civilian population of Ukraine faces a critical shortage of resources, in particular electricity, heat and water supply. People are exhausted due to constant shelling and destruction of infrastructure against the background of approaching difficult winter. Ukraine has lost 65% of its energy generating capacity as a result of strikes on the energy system in recent months. During the war, Ukrainians seek salvation abroad and in the regions of our country where the enemy’s aggression is less noticeable.

Deputy UN High Commissioner for Refugees Kelly T. Clemens notes, that since August, more than 170,000 people have been forced to leave their homes in the eastern regions of Ukraine, joining nearly 4 million internally displaced persons. Another 6.7 million Ukrainians sought refuge abroad, including 400,000 who became refugees between January and August this year, fleeing the war.

Defense financing

In general, during the period from 2022 to 2025, funding for the defense of Ukraine will increase significantly, which is related to the duration of the war and the need to modernize military resources.

The largest increase was recorded between 2022 and 2023 (20%), which reflects Ukraine’s active adaptation to the conditions of a long war.

The year 2024 shows a significant correction of plans during the year (this is about an additional 495 billion UAH), which indicates the need for a quick response to a change in the military situation. A moderate increase in defense funding is planned for 2025, which may indicate a desire to optimize military spending.

These data are only part of the scale of losses and challenges that Ukraine faced during the thousand days of war. They are a reminder of the price of freedom and the need to continue the struggle for life, security and the future of the country. Despite the difficulties, Ukraine is holding on, adapting to the realities of war and looking for ways to peace.
