Beijing proposes a new “peace plan” and calls on the world to support de-escalation

China, Brazil, Indonesia and South Africa have called on more countries in the world to join in supporting the Sino-Brazilian “peace plan” to resolve the conflict in Ukraine. This was stated by Li Hui, the special representative of the Chinese government for Eurasian affairs, informs The Washington Post.

Li Hui characterized these countries as “key players in promoting world peace” and emphasized that they maintain contacts with both Russia and Ukraine, remaining committed to the idea of a political solution to the crisis through dialogue and negotiations.

“The more countries support this ‘peace plan’, the more chances there are for de-escalation, and the brighter the prospects for achieving peace will become.”, – noted Lee.

In early May, Li Hui made a series of diplomatic visits to the countries of the Global South. The result of these meetings was the development by China of a new “peace plan”, consisting of six key points:

  • adherence to the “three principles” to reduce tensions: cessation of hostilities, prevention of escalation of the conflict and its spread to new territories.
  • recognition of dialogue and negotiations as the only possible way to resolve the crisis.
  • protection of the civilian population, in particular women, children and other victims, as well as respect for the rights of prisoners of war.
  • preventing the use of nuclear, biological and chemical weapons, deterring the spread of nuclear weapons and avoiding nuclear crises.
  • countering attacks on peaceful nuclear facilities.
  • joint support for international cooperation in the fields of energy, finance, grain trade, transport and ensuring the security of key infrastructure such as oil and gas pipelines, energy facilities and submarine optical cables, as well as the stability of the global supply system.

This plan is China’s attempt to intensify international efforts to find a peaceful solution to the conflict in Ukraine, in particular by involving a wider range of countries in the settlement process.
