China says it will challenge new US tariffs at the World Trade Organization

China has officially announced its intention to challenge the US tariffs through the World Trade Organization (WTO). About this reported The Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China, stressing that such actions by Washington violate international trade rules.

According to Channel NewsAsia, in its official statement, the Chinese ministry criticized the US policy, calling on the US to open dialogue and strengthen cooperation instead of creating trade barriers.

The conflict escalated after US President Donald Trump on Saturday ordered a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico, as well as a 10% tariff on Chinese goods. The new tariffs will come into effect from Tuesday. The decision has raised concerns among economists, who warn that trade tensions between major economies could spark another trade war that threatens to slow global economic growth and raise inflation.

In response to these measures, China issued a strong protest and promised to take countermeasures to protect its economic interests. The Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China called the actions of the US “erroneous” and expressed extreme dissatisfaction with the decision of the US administration.

“These tariffs will not only not help the US solve its domestic economic problems, but will also harm normal economic and trade cooperation between the countries.” – the Chinese government said.

In addition, Beijing called on Washington to review its policy, stop using customs restrictions as a tool of pressure and start a constructive dialogue. China has stressed that it expects the US to take a rational and objective approach to dealing with domestic problems such as the spread of fentanyl, instead of making constant economic threats to other countries.

It will be recalled that Canada is also preparing for economic measures in response. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that if the US implements new tariffs, his country will introduce a 25% tariff on American goods, including beverages and household appliances.

The decision on new tariffs was a continuation of the economic policy of the Trump administration, which on January 20 announced their introduction from February 1. The very next day, the Prime Minister of Canada announced the readiness of his government to act in response.

Escalating trade tensions between the US, China and Canada could lead to major changes in the global economy, affecting both international markets and the political situation between states.
