EU allocates 1.6 billion euros to Finland to maintain border with Russia

The European Union will allocate 1.6 billion euros to Finland for the maintenance of the eastern border with Russia — this is a billion more than in the previous EU budget period. About this informs Over.

EU ministers discussed the budget proposals of the European Commission for the period 2028-2034. According to previously released data on the distribution of funds, Finland will receive one billion euros more for the protection of its eastern border than in the current financial cycle. This information was confirmed by the Minister for European Cooperation and Management of State-owned Companies, Joachim Strand.

“The Commission offers Finland 1.6 billion euros, based on border control and migration criteria. This is 1 billion euros more than in the current period,” – said the minister.

Strand emphasized that the European Commission’s decision shows consideration of Finland’s position on border security. Finland has been closely monitoring Russian military activity near its eastern border following statements by the country’s armed forces and the media about increased construction of Russian military infrastructure in border areas.

It will be recalled that in June, Estonia began the construction of the Baltic Defense Line on the border with Russia. In the village of Vinski, an excavator digs a three-meter trench – this is the first test area of the Baltic Defense Zone, which is being built by Estonia. The trench is placed directly between the retarding fence and the boundary posts.
