EU countries are outraged by Hungary’s veto on aid to Ukraine

The member countries of the European Union are increasingly outraged by the fact that Hungary is blocking the allocation of more than 6.5 billion euros in military aid to Ukraine.

As written Bloomberg, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell expressed concern over the delay, stressing that it could cost human lives. Hungary, for its part, continues to block the financing of Ukrainian weapons, despite strong objections from other EU countries.

It is noted that the blocking of aid by Budapest is even more worrying, as the EU fund is due to receive up to 3 billion euros in July from profits from frozen Russian assets.

The Hungarian authorities said that they could not support the allocation of funds from the fund due to concerns about “negative discrimination of Hungarian companies in Ukraine.” However, other EU countries, such as Lithuania, criticize the Hungarian government for blocking a significant number of EU resolutions regarding Ukraine. In addition, the Budapest government opposes a possible 14th package of sanctions against Russia and the opening of a debate on the proposal to allow Western citizens to train Ukrainian soldiers on the territory of Ukraine.

This week, EU ambassadors should discuss a proposal to start negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU. Diplomats expect further obstacles from Hungary.
