EU and the world

EU foreign ministers approved the creation of a special tribunal for crimes of the Russian Federation.

On May 9, the ministers of foreign affairs of the European Union states and representatives of the governing bodies of the EU will meet in Lviv stated on political support for the establishment of the Special Tribunal regarding the crime of aggression against Ukraine.

The heads of foreign affairs and representatives of the coalition member countries supported the creation of a special tribunal, citing the relevant resolutions of the UN General Assembly, as well as the Vienna-Riga statement of November 22, 2024. The statement was agreed with the participation of high-ranking officials of the European Union, in particular the head of EU diplomacy Kaia Callas and the European Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, Rule of Law and Consumer Protection Michael McGrath.

“An important signal is the establishment of a tribunal for the crime of aggression. This means that no one will go unpunished for the crimes they committed. Even the leaders who decided to send their soldiers to commit all the war crimes we see here.” – said Kaya Callas.

The International Criminal Court in The Hague, which has already issued six warrants for the arrest of representatives of the Russian military and political leadership, has jurisdiction to consider cases of crimes of aggression, but can only condemn those states that have ratified the Rome Statute. Since Russia is not a party to it, Ukraine’s Western partners emphasized the need to create a separate independent tribunal to investigate the crime of aggression committed against Ukraine.
