Finland’s innovative approach: mining farms as a source of heat

The mining company Marathon Digital Holdings has found a unique way to use the thermal energy generated during cryptocurrency mining. In their official X social network account, company representatives reported that the “side heat” of their farms is used to heat tens of thousands of homes in Finland. About this writes Mugglehead Magazine.
Marathon Digital has implemented district heating technology, which converts excess heat into an efficient source of energy. The system heats water, which is supplied to buildings for heating through underground pipelines.
“Back in June, the company announced the use of a centralized heating system to convert excess heat from bitcoin mining into a practical resource. The system provides heating of water that is transported through a network of pipelines to residential buildings.”, – reminds the publication.
Marathon implemented the first such heating project in the summer of 2024, when heat from cryptocurrency mining began to heat 11,000 homes in the Finnish region of Satakunta. Recently, another 67,000 homes were connected to this network.
Marathon is a leading Bitcoin mining company with a market capitalization of around $7 billion. It is the second largest publicly held Bitcoin company with assets of 44,394 BTC.
“Bitcoin mining heat recycling is no longer an edge case, it is a real thing that is being implemented on an ever-increasing scale. 80 thousand of homes heated by bitcoin mining is significant and this is just the beginning of what is possible”, said venture capitalist Daniel Batten.
