Floating power plants will soon be placed in Odesa: Cabinet decision

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine approved the plan for the placement of floating power plants in the Odesa region, on which gas piston or gas turbine units will be installed. The corresponding decision was approved by resolution №1069 from September 13, 2024.

As stated in the document, this step is aimed at improving the country’s energy security and restoring damaged critical infrastructure as a result of Russia’s military aggression.

According to the resolution, the lease of vessels of the technical fleet, equipped with gas piston or gas turbine installations for the production of electricity, and the hiring of personnel for their maintenance can be carried out without holding open tenders. This decision will allow to quickly provide alternative sources of electricity to protect critical infrastructure from possible blackouts.

The initiative to place floating power plants is not new. At the beginning of 2023, the Turkish company Karpowership signed a memorandum of intent to provide Ukraine with floating power plants with a total capacity of 500 MW. In addition, the German company Siemens offered the government of Ukraine to place its floating power plants in the water areas of Odesa, Mykolaiv and Izmail.

Thus, the new government plan envisages the creation of additional capacities to ensure a stable electricity supply, which is critically important against the background of ongoing hostilities.
