French MPs call on the US to return the Statue of Liberty

French deputies called on the United States to return the Statue of Liberty, which the people of France presented in honor of the centenary of American independence. In their opinion, Washington no longer embodies the values that once prompted Paris to make this gift. About this informs France 24.

“We will say to Americans who chose to side with tyrants, to Americans who fired researchers for demanding scientific freedom: ‘Give us back the Statue of Liberty,'” – said representatives of the center-left movement Place Publique.

Deputies noted that the USA apparently despises this symbol:

“We gave her to you, but you seem to despise her. So here at home she will be perfectly fine.”

It will be recalled that the Statue of Liberty was opened in the harbor of New York on October 28, 1886 in honor of the centenary of the American Declaration of Independence as a gift of the French people. It was designed by the French sculptor Auguste Bartholdi. Paris also has a smaller replica of the Statue of Liberty, set on a small island in the Seine River.
