German Defense Minister denies information about transfer of Taurus missiles to Ukraine

Despite earlier promises, the German government under the leadership of new Chancellor Friedrich Mertz is not considering the possibility of supplying Ukraine with Taurus long-range cruise missiles. About this reported German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius during a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi in Kyiv.

Pistorius was asked whether the new German government is considering the supply of Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine.

You asked me the question, are we considering it? I answer you: no!” – answered the Minister of Defense of Germany.

Taurus missiles are German guided munitions with a range of up to 500 km and a warhead weighing 500 kg. They are analogues of the British Storm Shadow and the French SCALP-EG, which are already in service with the Armed Forces.

It will be recalled that at the end of May, Chancellor of Germany Friedrich Merz said that providing Ukraine with long-range Taurus cruise missiles “is within the limits of the possible”.

Former German Chancellor Olaf Scholz ruled out the possibility of transferring long-range Taurus missiles to Ukraine. He has repeatedly noted that Germany will not give the Armed Forces permission to strike on Russian territory and does not plan to supply its missiles to Ukraine.

Merz, who became chancellor in early May 2025, said Germany would “do everything possible” to continue supporting Ukraine. On May 26, he announced that Germany, Great Britain, France, and the United States had canceled restrictions on the range of weapons transferred to Ukraine.
