Google launches new AI features for people with visual impairments

Google has announced updates to TalkBack and Chrome features aimed at improving accessibility for Android users. Thanks to the innovations, visually impaired people can now ask Gemini AI questions about the content of images and what is displayed on the screen. For example, the system can describe a photo of a guitar or find information about discounts in online stores. About this informs the press service of the company.

“Advances in artificial intelligence continue to make our world more accessible. Today, in honor of World Accessibility Awareness Day, we’re releasing new updates to our Android and Chrome products, as well as adding new resources for developers building speech recognition tools.”, says the message.

Expressive Captions now supports intonation — it can now recognize stretched words and capture sounds like whistling or coughing. This feature is currently only available in English in Android 15 for users in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia.

In addition, Chrome for desktop has added optical text recognition (OCR) support for scanned PDF documents, allowing screen readers to read them. A new Page Zoom function has appeared on Android – it allows you to change the size of the text without disturbing the structure of the page.
