Helsinki Commission calls on the US to change its strategy towards Russia

The Helsinki Commission calls on Washington to radically revise its approach to cooperation with Russia, abandoning the remnants of the Cold War and recognizing Moscow as a constant threat to global security. In a report to which is referred edition of The Hill, it is noted that the United States should change its strategy in relations with Russia, similar to how it has revised its policy towards China in recent years. In addition, it is recommended to allocate resources according to new challenges.
A key element of the new strategy is Ukraine’s victory in its war against Russia. The report suggests significantly expanding military and humanitarian aid to Kyiv, as well as giving Ukrainian forces the ability to strike Russian territory with American weapons.
These proposals significantly exceed commitments made by the Joe Biden administration to support Ukraine and oppose the views of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, who has repeatedly criticized US spending on European security. Trump proposed to resolve the conflict between Ukraine and Russia through direct negotiations with Vladimir Putin.
However, Joe Wilson, chairman of the Helsinki Committee and a Republican from South Carolina, dismissed the possibility of Trump making any deal with Putin. In an interview with The Hill, Wilson emphasized that Putin is a war criminal with whom it is impossible to reach serious and lasting agreements.
Despite growing opposition from parts of the Republican Party to support Ukraine, many foreign policy-focused Republican leaders continue to support Kyiv, NATO commitments, and strengthening democracy in post-Soviet states.
