Children of war

In Lviv, children with diabetes are provided with insulin pumps for free: a city program has been launched

Diabetes is a chronic disease that changes a person’s life forever. This problem is especially acute in children, because diabetes requires constant control of blood sugar levels, strict adherence to the diet and regular administration of insulin. An additional factor complicating the course of the disease is stress. War, loss of loved ones, uncertainty and fear are all factors that worsen the condition of children with diabetes, causing sharp fluctuations in glucose levels and increasing the risk of complications. That is why any initiatives aimed at making life easier for such patients are extremely important.

In Lviv, the city program of providing children with type 1 diabetes with insulin pumps and consumables was launched. About this informs press service of the LMR. This is a modern treatment method that helps control blood sugar levels more effectively and significantly improves the quality of life of young patients. The first eight children have already received insulin pumps for free, and seven more will be fitted this month.

The cost of one insulin pump is 80 thousand hryvnias. In addition, about 6 thousand hryvnias are needed for consumables for one child every month. As part of the program operating in Lviv, 15 sets of insulin pumps with consumables were purchased last year, and 23 such sets are planned to be purchased this year. A total of 110 children are currently on the waiting list.

Installation of insulin pumps is carried out by endocrinologists of the Saint Nicholas Hospital of the First Medical Association of Lviv. After adjusting the device to each child’s needs, doctors adjust the insulin dosage and provide training for parents and children. Only after that the child is discharged home.

Children of servicemen, missing persons, Heroes of Ukraine, families with many children and low-income families, as well as children raised by one parent, have the right to receive insulin pumps as a priority. In order to receive assistance, the child must be younger than 18 years old and have lived in Lviv for at least a year before the application is submitted. Documents should be submitted to St. Nicholas Hospital of the First Medical Association of Lviv.

The head of the health care department of the Lviv City Council, Marta Matyushko, emphasized that the installation of insulin pumps is a very important step in supporting children with diabetes, as it allows them to live an active life without constant injections. She noted that this device provides more accurate dosing of insulin and a stable sugar level, which reduces the risk of complications – loss of vision, damage to the kidneys, blood vessels and nervous system. At the same time, it enables children to lead a freer and more comfortable lifestyle. According to her, parents of children who have already received insulin pumps are extremely grateful to the city for such support.

We remind you that an insulin pump is the most modern method of treating diabetes. The device works 24/7, imitating the work of the pancreas. He injects insulin in microdoses, which allows you to avoid sharp fluctuations in sugar levels and significantly reduces the risk of complications. The use of insulin pumps helps to avoid frequent injections, stabilize the child’s condition and improve his quality of life. In times of war, when the level of stress increases, such technologies are especially important for maintaining the health of children.
