India overtakes China for the first time in smartphone shipments to the US

In the second quarter of 2025, India surpassed China for the first time in terms of smartphone shipments to the US market. About this informs Reuters with reference to data from the analytical company Canalys.
In the period from April to June, the share of smartphones imported to the US from India increased 3.4 times — up to 44% of the total volume of deliveries. For comparison, in the second quarter of 2024, this figure was only 13%. At the same time, the share of Chinese devices in the American market decreased significantly — to 25% compared to 61% a year earlier. Vietnam also improved its position, increasing its share to 30%.
According to Canalys chief analyst Sanyam Chaurasia, the growth in Indian exports is due to the fact that Apple has partially moved production from China to India amid heightened trade tensions between the US and China.
Total smartphone sales in the US for the quarter increased by 1% to 27.1 million devices. At the same time, Apple reduced shipments by 11%, to 13.3 million, and Samsung, on the contrary, increased by 38%, to 8.3 million. Motorola and Google also recorded sales increases, while TCL saw a 23% drop.
Apple intends by the end of next year to ensure the import of the majority of iPhones sold in the US market, precisely from India. Such a move has already caused criticism from Donald Trump – he personally appealed to the company’s CEO Tim Cook with a call to stop building new production facilities in India and concentrate production within the United States.
