Meloni proposed to extend NATO’s mutual defense clause to Ukraine

Italian Prime Minister Giorgio Meloni considers the idea of deploying peacekeeping forces in Ukraine too complicated and risky. Instead, it offers an alternative option — to extend the effect of NATO’s mutual defense mechanism to Ukraine without its formal accession to the Alliance. About this informs Financial Times.

“This approach would be simpler and more effective than other ideas on the table.” Maloney explained.

She also dismissed fears that it could provoke Russia, noting:

“But if they see it as a bigger threat, without Ukraine in NATO, then that means we can’t trust any peace signed with Russia, because if Russia really doesn’t want to invade Ukraine again, why should it say no?”

Maloney said she intends to present her initiative to the White House and stressed her desire to avoid tensions between the European Union and the United States.

“If Italy has any possibility to avoid the confrontation between Europe and the USA and to eliminate the differences between them, then I will do it.” she emphasized.

The Prime Minister of Italy also noted that she does not expect a new Russian attack on Ukraine while Donald Trump remains the president of the United States, but suggested that such a threat may appear after his term ends.
