Microsoft Permanently Shuts Down Skype

Microsoft has announced that Skype will be discontinued in May 2025. Users will be transferred to the Teams platform. About this reported press office Microsoft.
Information about the possible closure of Skype appeared back in February, and later the representative of the company, Jeff Tipper, confirmed that the program will stop working on May 5 of this year. The company explained this decision by focusing on the development of Microsoft Teams — “a modern center of communication and collaboration.” The goal is to optimize free communication services for consumers and improve the adaptation of the product to the needs of users.
In Teams, the main features that Skype used to have are available: individual and group calls, messaging and file sharing. In addition, the platform provides opportunities for organizing meetings, working with calendars, as well as free creation and participation in communities. On the official website of Skype, in the Windows section, a message about the termination of the service appeared.
Users are advised to switch to Teams for further communication:
“From May, Skype will no longer be available. Keep calling and chatting in Teams. Some of your friends have already switched to Teams for free.”
Microsoft launched Teams as an enterprise tool in 2017. The service quickly gained popularity and became one of the key competitors of the Slack platform.
We will remind that Skype was launched in 2003. In 2011, it was acquired by Microsoft. Later, some of the company’s other internal products, such as Windows Live Messenger, were discontinued, and in 2015 an attempt was made to integrate Skype into Windows 10.
However, Skype has not been able to compete with other popular platforms such as FaceTime and Google products. As of the beginning of 2025, it was not among the top ten most popular messengers. Skype had about 40 million monthly active users, compared to SnapChat’s 850 million, Telegram’s 950 million, and WhatsApp’s 2 billion, according to EnterpriseAppsToday.
