Most South Koreans oppose the provision of weapons to Ukraine

82% of South Korean citizens are against providing military aid to Ukraine, although the majority admits that the strengthening of cooperation between Russia and North Korea poses a serious threat to Seoul. About this informs Reuters with reference to the results of the Gallup Korea poll.

The survey was conducted against the background of the statement of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi, who announced his intention to send an official request to Seoul regarding the provision of military assistance, in particular, artillery and air defense systems. However, the possible outcome of the talks is in question due to the potential victory of Donald Trump in the US presidential elections, which creates additional uncertainty.

South Korea has already provided Ukraine with demining machines, body armor and other non-lethal aid, while not ruling out the possibility of supplying weapons. This prospect became more real after reports from Seoul and Washington about sending thousands of North Korean troops to support Russia.

However, this stance has drawn criticism from South Korea’s main opposition Democratic Party. The opposition called on the government to obtain parliamentary approval to make decisions on the possible supply of weapons.

South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol, commenting on this situation, emphasized that he does not rule out the possibility of providing military aid to Ukraine, especially given the cooperation between North Korea and Russia.
