NATO’s statement on the war in Ukraine caused outrage in China

In Beijing, they disagreed with the position of the Alliance and demanded "not to provoke a confrontation".

China issued a sharp protest in response to the statement by the US and its allies after NATO took the unprecedented step of calling Beijing a threat to its interests and a tool of the Kremlin in its war against Ukraine. This caused a serious diplomatic conflict, informs The Wall Street Journal.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization accused China of supporting Russia in the war with Ukraine and expressed concern about the expansion of China’s nuclear arsenal. In a statement released at its annual summit in Washington, NATO also accused Beijing of acting irresponsibly in cyberspace and outer space.

At a regular press briefing in Beijing, the official representative of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lin Jin, responded sharply, calling NATO’s statement “full of superstition, slander and provocation.”

Lin emphasized that NATO threatens China’s interests by expanding its influence in Asia, and said that the alliance “does not have the right to spoil Asia as it has spoiled Europe.”

Journalists note that the decision of NATO leaders to abandon diplomatic restraint towards China reflects the growing geopolitical tension in connection with Russia’s protracted war against Ukraine. Beijing and Moscow seek to create an alternative to the US-led world order.

NATO’s warning sparked widespread outrage on Chinese social media, where it sparked a flurry of nationalist commentary and became the most popular topic on Weibo. Many users believe that this statement signals that China is the next target of NATO.

“They are ending the confrontation between Russia and Ukraine and are now free to attack us.” – wrote one of the Weibo users in a comment that has gained more than a thousand likes.
