Olaf Scholz blocks new aid package for Ukraine

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz opposes additional aid to Ukraine in the amount of 3 billion euros, which is supported by Foreign Minister Annalena Burbok and Defense Minister Boris Pistorius. informs The mirror.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock and Defense Minister Boris Pistorius insist on the allocation of an additional 3 billion euros for the supply of weapons to Ukraine even before the Bundestag elections. However, their initiative is opposed by Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s office.

The weapons list, which was compiled after the collapse of the government coalition in November 2024, includes three Iris-T anti-aircraft batteries with missiles, Patriot missiles, ten wheeled howitzers and artillery ammunition.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defense of Germany justify the need for additional funding by the fact that the situation in Ukraine has significantly worsened due to the intensification of the Russian offensive, as well as the uncertainty regarding military support from the United States after the victory of Donald Trump in the presidential elections.

However, the implementation of this plan was suspended at the beginning of January. The chancellor’s office has informally signaled its disagreement, citing a reluctance to create a commitment for a future government. Scholz also believes that the available 4 billion euros provided in the 2025 budget for military aid to Ukraine are sufficient.
