OpenAI launches AI agent for software development

The American company OpenAI, known as the developer of the chatbot ChatGPT, presented a preview version of the Codex AI agent, created to perform programming tasks using artificial intelligence.

Codex is capable of multitasking, including writing code, debugging, testing and answering technical questions, the company said. The new product is based on the codex-1 model, a version of the o3 model specially optimized for software development. The tool is available to ChatGPT users on Pro, Team and Enterprise plans.

Codex will allow developers to delegate part of the tasks more efficiently. The tool works in a cloud environment and can provide a ready result within 1 to 30 minutes. The company also emphasizes that Codex outperforms similar solutions in adapting to the user’s programming style and facilitating code review. The Codex preview was released for research purposes — OpenAI plans to collect user feedback.

“We’re still in the early stages and have a lot to learn.” – said the company’s vice president of development Srinivas Narayanan.

OpenAI has reached an agreement to buy Exafunction for approximately $3 billion. Exafunction created the Windsurf tool, an analogue of Codex. Currently, software solutions for software development remain among the most popular in the field of artificial intelligence.
