Children of war

Restoration of educational institutions in the Kharkiv region: schools and kindergartens are brought back to life for the sake of children of war

War not only destroys homes, infrastructure and economies, but also leaves a deep mark on the lives of children. For them, education becomes not just a means of acquiring knowledge, but a real salvation – a source of stability, psychological support and socialization. In conditions where childhood is destroyed by explosions, schoolchildren need not only education, but also a safe environment that will help them adapt to the new reality.

Ukrainian children who are going through the war face challenges every day: forced relocation, loss of loved ones, constant stress, as well as the destruction of schools and kindergartens. The lack of a high-quality educational process threatens entire generations, which may be left without the necessary knowledge and skills for further life. Therefore, today the restoration of educational institutions is one of the key priorities for local authorities and international partners.

Kharkiv Region, which suffered significant destruction due to hostilities, is gradually rebuilding its schools and kindergartens, creating safe conditions for children to study.

Restoration of schools and kindergartens in Kharkiv region

Active work on the reconstruction of educational institutions continues in the Kharkiv region. According to the information of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, repair works are being carried out in 37 educational institutions in the region. The main emphasis is placed not only on the restoration of premises, but also on the arrangement of shelters, which is a prerequisite for safe training during martial law.

In general, within the framework of reconstruction, the repair and restoration of 14 educational institutions directly in Kharkiv, as well as in the communities of the region, is foreseen. Work continues in the following settlements:

  • Loziv community – 5 objects
  • Zlatopylla – 4 establishments
  • Barvinkivska hromada – 2 institutions
  • Sakhnovshchyna community – 2 institutions
  • Balaklia community – 2 institutions
  • Slobozhansk, Pisochynsk, Chuguyvsk, Dergachivsk, Berestynsk and Vysochansk communities – 1 educational institution each

Thus, reconstruction covers both large cities and smaller communities, which will ensure access to quality education for children who remain in the region.

Learning safety is a top priority

In addition to the usual repair of schools and kindergartens, special attention is paid to the creation of shelters. During air raids, children and teachers must have a safe place to take shelter, and that is why specially equipped bomb shelters are provided in all educational institutions undergoing reconstruction.

The construction of shelters is carried out in accordance with all safety standards: the premises are equipped with ventilation, sanitary areas, water and medicine supplies. An important aspect is also the creation of comfortable conditions for the stay of children – in some schools, shelters are adapted for temporary classrooms, where lessons can continue even during an emergency.

Rebuilding schools and safe shelters will allow more children to return to full-time education. Despite the development of distance education, many families face problems with access to the Internet or the necessary equipment, which makes online learning difficult. Therefore, the opening of renovated educational institutions is extremely important for the educational process in Kharkiv region.

Prospects and further plans

Work on the restoration of educational institutions in the Kharkiv region does not stop – the regional authorities are looking for funding for the repair of new schools and kindergartens. In addition, the possibility of involving international partners to expand programs of safe education and psychological support for children who have survived hostilities is being considered.

Programs for adapting the educational process to the realities of wartime are also being developed. This includes not only physical security, but also the implementation of psychological support courses for schoolchildren and teachers. War leaves a significant emotional imprint on children, so many schools already have psychologists and specialists in adaptation to stressful situations.

Another important direction is providing schools with modern digital technologies for effective distance learning. Even after children return to classes, the possibility of online education will remain relevant in cases of emergency situations or the need to study in remote areas.

Education as the foundation of the future

Despite all the challenges brought by the war, education remains one of Ukraine’s key priorities. It is through education that the future generation is formed, which will rebuild the country after the war. Restoration of educational institutions, creation of safe conditions for children and teachers is not only a matter of today, but also a guarantee of the future development of Kharkiv Oblast and the whole of Ukraine.

The efforts being made now to return children to schools and kindergartens are an important step towards the normalization of life, psychological rehabilitation and the formation of the young generation’s confidence in the future. And although the war is still going on, each rebuilt school and each restored children’s classroom is another step towards victory and the revival of the country.
