Russia uses Western equipment for the production of “Hazelnut”: FT

The Russian experimental Oreshnik ballistic missile launched over Ukraine in the second half of November was manufactured using modern Western production equipment. Russian companies continue to use it, despite the sanctions. About this informs Financial Times.

Ukrainian intelligence calls the Moscow Institute of Thermal Engineering and the Sozvezdiye concern the key developers of this missile. These institutions are actively looking for employees who have experience with metalworking systems from German and Japanese manufacturers (Fanuc, Siemens and Heidenhain). This demonstrates the dependence of Russia’s military industry on foreign technologies.

This dependence is especially noticeable in the field of computer numerical control (CNC), which is critically important for the production of such missiles as Oreshnik. The Moscow Institute of Thermal Engineering, according to Ukrainian intelligence, plays a key role in the development of Russian solid-fuel ballistic missiles and continues to work with Western-made equipment.

Even at the Russian exhibitions of 2024, a significant part of the presented devices with CNC, in particular Chinese ones, are equipped with controllers of Japanese and German companies. The issue of stopping the supply of such technologies to Russia remains one of the priorities for Ukraine’s allies, who seek to limit the capabilities of the Russian military-industrial complex.
