Scholz refused to supply Ukraine with Taurus missiles, despite US permission to strike on Russian territory

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has refused to supply Ukraine with Taurus cruise missiles, even after reports of US authorization to strike long-range weapons deep into Russian territory. According to the deputy spokesman of the German government, Wolfgang Büchner, Scholz’s position remains “unchanged” — he has “clearly decided” on this issue and “will not change” his point of view. As reported AFP, he announced this during an event in the city of Niedergersdorf in Brandenburg.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz once again confirmed his refusal to supply Ukraine with Taurus long-range cruise missiles. The politician believes that in this way he keeps Germany from directly participating in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia. According to Scholz, despite the fact that many people convinced him to hand over the Taurus to Ukraine, he will not “deliver cruise missiles that reach Moscow.” Scholz emphasized that he does not want Germany to be drawn into the war, although his country provides support to Ukraine through other forms of military aid.
According to Scholz, he is afraid of an escalation of the conflict when German weapons begin to hit targets on the territory of Russia, so his position on this issue will remain unchanged. Scholz is sticking to his line, despite growing criticism and an upcoming election that could affect his political career.
It should be noted that not all German politicians share Scholz’s opinion. For example, Robert Habek, candidate for chancellor of Germany from the “Greens” party, has already announced that he will allow the supply of long-range Taurus missiles to Ukraine, if he is elected as the head of the government.
We will remind that Germany consistently refused to transfer Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine – even after Great Britain, France and the USA transferred their long-range weapons.
