South Korean president, despite impeachment, received a salary increase

Deposed South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol has received a salary increase in 2025. This was not hindered by the investigation related to his actions during the introduction of martial law last year, informs The Independent.
Yoon’s salary will increase 3% to 262.6 million won ($178,000) in 2025, up from 254.9 million won ($172,000) in 2024. The monthly income of the president will be 21.8 million won ($14.8 thousand). This increase is in line with the general increase in the wages of civil servants in the country.
Former presidents of South Korea are known to receive 95% of their salary on a monthly basis for the rest of their lives after their term of office ends. Former acting president Han Dak-soo, who held the position for a short time, will also receive a 3% raise, amounting to 204 million won ($138,000) a year.
It will be recalled that on December 14, the country’s parliament voted to impeach Yoon Seok-yeol after his attempt to introduce martial law in the country on December 3, citing the opposition’s alleged ties to the DPRK. The martial law declared by Yun lasted only a few hours.
