Spanish opposition calls on Prime Minister Sanchez to resign over corruption allegations

In Spain, opposition forces on Sunday demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and announced their intention to file a complaint against his party over suspected corruption, Le Figaro reports.

The right-wing parties made the accusations based on information related to Sanchez’s former adviser, former Transport Minister Jose Luis Abalos. Popular Party Secretary General Cuca Gamarra called on Sánchez to step down, claiming that the new evidence showed systemic corruption under his leadership. The People’s Party plans to file a complaint against the Socialist Party on Monday over suspicions of illegal financing and corruption related to the Abalos scandal that emerged during the pandemic.

Abalos, who served as Minister of Transport from 2018 to 2021, was expelled from the Socialist Party after being accused of taking bribes for mask supply contracts.

‘We are asking Pedro Sanchez to resign – he cannot remain at the head of the Spanish government for another minute,’ said Cuca Gamarra, secretary general of the conservative Popular Party, at a press conference.

According to him, the details that are now emerging ‘reveal the systematic corruption that Pedro Sanchez is leading’.
