Switzerland has joined the next EU sanctions against Russia

Switzerland has decided to join the European Union’s 14th package of sanctions against Russia, increasing pressure on Moscow for its aggression. This was reported by the press service of the Swiss government, noting that it is appropriate decision was adopted by the Federal Council on August 21.
The new measures Switzerland is introducing include restrictions under the latest EU sanctions package. In particular, we are talking about the ban on the import of Russian diamonds, which became one of the key points of this sanctions package. As specified in the government’s statement, these measures will come into effect on August 27.
In addition, on July 9, Switzerland already included 69 individuals and 47 legal entities associated with the Russian regime in its sanctions list. These actions demonstrate the consistency of the Swiss authorities’ support of international pressure on Russia.
The history of these sanctions goes back to June 24, when the European Union approved the 14th package of restrictions against Russia. The main focus was on the fight against Russian exports, in particular liquefied natural gas (LNG). The sanctions include a ban on the transshipment of Russian LNG in the EU for further transportation to third countries, although the import of this product directly to EU countries remains permitted.
Another important component of the new package of sanctions was the restriction for EU companies operating outside of Russia to connect to the Russian System for the Transmission of Financial Messages (SFMS), which is an analogue of SWIFT.
Switzerland’s decision to continue sanctions pressure together with the EU confirms its solidarity with its European partners and its desire to restrain Russia’s aggressive actions on the international stage.
