The EU approved the 16th package of sanctions against Russia

On February 24, the Council of the EU adopted another, 16th package of economic and individual restrictive measures against the Russian Federation. About this informs press service of Euroradi.

“This new round of sanctions targets not only Russia’s shadow fleet, but also those who support the operation of dangerous oil tankers; video game consoles used to control drones; banks used to circumvent our sanctions; and propaganda channels,” – said the head of EU diplomacy Kaia Callas.

The new sanctions target Russia’s shadow fleet and individuals who facilitate the operation of dangerous oil tankers, banks that help circumvent sanctions restrictions, and Russian propaganda TV channels.

The 16th package of sanctions includes 48 individuals and 35 organizations involved in actions that threaten the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Additional vessels have come under restrictions, which are prohibited from entering ports and receiving services related to maritime transportation. This applies to tankers from countries that are not part of the EU, but are part of the Russian shadow fleet.

For the first time, the European Union is introducing a ban on financial transactions for credit and financial institutions registered outside of Russia, if they use the Central Bank of the Russian Federation’s “Financial Messaging System”. In addition, another 13 Russian banks will be disconnected from the SWIFT international payment system.

Another 53 organizations have been added to the list of entities that directly support Russia’s military-industrial complex. They will fall under stricter export restrictions on dual-purpose goods and technologies, as well as products that can contribute to the development of the defense and security sector of the Russian Federation.
