The EU may send up to 100 thousand peacekeepers to Ukraine: Reuters

A coalition consisting of five to eight European countries can deploy up to 100,000 military personnel to deter Russian aggression in Ukraine. About this reported Reuters publication

Analysts and officials give different estimates of the size of the possible contingent, depending on the specific tasks that will be faced by these forces. In particular, it is proposed to send about 40,000 European troops to carry out such missions.

Austrian military expert Franz-Stefan Gadi, who represents the International Institute for Strategic Studies, indicated that under the conditions of a rotational scheme, when units are preparing for deployment or undergoing recovery after it, about 100 thousand may be involved in the operation military personnel

“It will certainly stretch European ground forces a lot,” – he noted.

Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto emphasized that any peacekeeping mission should operate under the auspices of the United Nations. At the same time, other officials warn that it could give Russia, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, too much influence over decisions about the operation.

In addition, in order to implement such a mission, Europe will probably have to convince the US to participate in at least part of the operation. This can be, for example, providing intelligence or other operational support.
