The EU officially extended sectoral sanctions against Russia

On June 30, the European Union officially extended the sectoral sanctions against Russia until January 31, 2026. This was stated by the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaya Callas.

“Today, the EU officially agreed to extend sectoral sanctions against Russia. We will continue to pressure Moscow to end the war in Ukraine. Each sanction weakens Russia’s ability to wage war.” – says the message.

These economic restrictions, which were first introduced in 2014, have been significantly strengthened since February 2022 in response to Russia’s unprovoked and illegal military aggression against Ukraine.

Sanctions currently cover a wide range of areas, including trade, finance, energy, technology, dual-use goods, industry, transportation and luxury goods. These include: a ban on the import of marine oil and some oil products from Russia, the disconnection of a number of banks from the SWIFT system, as well as the suspension of the Kremlin’s propaganda media in the EU. Separate measures are aimed at preventing the circumvention of sanctions.

We will remind that the next extension of sanctions was approved by the European Council on June 26. The decision requires unanimous support, and Hungary and Slovakia have previously threatened to block it in exchange for concessions.
