The European Central Bank will change the design of euro banknotes for the first time in 23 years

The European Central Bank will update the design of the euro for the first time in 23 years, aiming to make the banknotes more attractive and user-friendly. About this informs Independent.

Euro banknotes currently feature nameless bridges and windows, but the new design could include portraits of prominent cultural figures or a combination of birds and rivers.

If the option with famous personalities is chosen, the Greek opera singer Maria Callas, the composer Ludwig van Beethoven, the Polish-French scientist Marie Curie, the Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes, the Italian artist and inventor Leonardo da Vinci and the Austrian activist of the movement could appear on the banknotes. the peace of Bert von Suttner.

Images of cultural events or objects, such as libraries or music festivals, are planned to be placed on the back of such banknotes. The list of names, proposed by a group of independent experts and selected by the ECB, could be controversial because it covers only six of the twenty eurozone countries.

An alternative version of the design involves images of birds and rivers on the front side of the banknotes, and on the reverse – European institutions, in particular the European Central Bank itself.
