The ex-head of the Supreme Court of Ukraine increased his pension to 344.4 thousand hryvnias

Ex-Chairman of the Supreme Court of Ukraine Yaroslav Romanyuk, using the possibilities of the current legislation, raised his pension up to 344.4 thousand hryvnias.

Yaroslav Romanyuk, who headed the Supreme Court until 2017, managed to increase his pension thanks to a court decision that allowed additional periods of service to be taken into account. According to the decision of the judge of the Kyiv Administrative District Court, Iryna Kolesnykova, the period of military service, half of the period of study at a higher educational institution, as well as the time of work at the prosecutor’s office of the Buski district of the Lviv region were added to the total work experience.

Previously, according to the declaration for 2023, Romanyuk’s annual pension amounted to 2 million 937 thousand hryvnias, which corresponded to a monthly income of 244.7 thousand hryvnias. After the court decision, his pension payments increased to 344.4 thousand hryvnias per month. Thus, the percentage of the pension, which was previously 54% of the judge’s remuneration, has now increased to 76%.

Yaroslav Romaniuk held the position of judge for a little over 22 years, which was taken into account by the Pension Fund when calculating the lifetime allowance. After a strict review of his seniority due to a court decision, the total term of service has already been more than 33 years.

The former head of the Supreme Court acted within the framework of the current legislation, and this case highlights the problem of extremely high pensions of judges in Ukraine. Under the law, judges can receive pension payments of up to 90% of their salary, while for ordinary citizens this figure is only 30%. For example, retired judges in the Lviv region receive an average of about 112,000 hryvnias per month, and the largest pension in Ukraine, according to the Pension Fund, is 390,184 hryvnias.
