The first solar power plant was opened in the Chernobyl zone

In the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone launched the first solar power plant, and another one is planned to open soon. The new power plant has a capacity of 763 kW, and its construction covers almost 4,000 square meters.
The Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine Svitlana Grynchuk noted that preparations for the implementation of the project began in 2019, but the full-scale invasion of Russia caused delays. The station, built with the support of Spain, was the first stage – another one should be opened in the summer, the capacity of which will be twice as large. The total cost of the first project was 30 million hryvnias.
According to the minister, putting the station into operation is a strategic step in the conditions of constant attacks on the energy infrastructure of Ukraine. The received electricity will cover the needs of administrative buildings and other objects of the Exclusion Zone.
“Why else is it important? Because we have been talking for many years about the need to turn the Exclusion Zone into a revival zone. And this territory, like no other in Ukraine, is suitable for developing renewable energy projects, solar and wind generation here.”, the minister noted.
Grynchuk also added that the necessary infrastructure for the implementation of new energy initiatives has been preserved in the Chernobyl zone, and the territory itself has a special legal status. In her opinion, the Exclusion Zone can become a key center for the development of green energy in Ukraine.
