The statement of the defense ministers of the Baltic countries about the threat to them after the end of the war in Ukraine caused an angry reaction from people’s deputies

Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are concerned that the end of the war in Ukraine could significantly increase the threat to the security of the Baltic states. As the Financial Times writes, the defense ministers of these countries warn: Russia will not stop at Ukraine, but will take advantage of the pause in hostilities to regroup forces, modernize weapons and increase the military presence on NATO’s northeastern border.
Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur said that a ceasefire in Ukraine would allow Russia to quickly regroup forces and increase pressure on NATO’s northeastern flank. During his visit to Britain, his Lithuanian colleague Dovile Shakalene emphasized: “you should not be under the illusion that the end of the war in Ukraine means the defeat of Russia.” On the contrary, according to her, Moscow will only use this pause to prepare a new escalation in a different direction.
These statements of the ministers provoked sharp criticism from the people’s deputies of Ukraine, who saw in it either cynicism or an attempt to shift the responsibility for the security of Europe to our country.
People’s Deputy Maksym Buzhanskyi considered statements as a manifestation of not only cynicism, but also a complete loss of faith in NATO on the part of the allies themselves.
“Here is the statement of the Defense Ministers of Estonia and Lithuania that the cessation of the war in our country dramatically increases the threat to them, this is not about frank cynicism. Everything has been understood with cynicism for a long time.
And not even about the stupidity of these defense ministers, who do not understand that many things are not said out loud, even if they are obvious.
This is about the fact that even Lithuania and Estonia no longer believe in NATO, do not hope for it. That’s all, Bobik died, so he never yawned.” Buzhanskyi wrote.
His colleague, People’s Deputy Oleksiy Goncharenko, spoke no less emotionally, but with a different focus — on the national interests of Ukraine, which, according to him, should no longer be sacrificed to Europe’s fears.
“Once again: it’s enough to play the role of the saviors of Europe. You have NATO, armies, resources – so go ahead, defend yourself.
We need to save ourselves. End it. To restore the economy, strengthen the army and make Ukraine so strong that no one dares to even think about a new attack.
We have already paid our price. That’s enough.
Ukraine should go into strategic defense, strengthen the economy and build a powerful military industry.
And Europe, if it is afraid of Russian aggression, let it fight.” – wrote Honcharenko in Telegram.
