The supply of drones to Ukraine is under threat due to the collapse of the coalition in Germany

After the collapse of the ruling coalition in Germany, the decision on the further supply of weapons to Ukraine, including important drones, was in jeopardy. As reported The mirror, before the political crisis in Germany, Chancellor Olaf Scholz discussed the possibility of allocating an additional 3 billion euros for military support to Ukraine. In 2023, Germany has already sent almost 8 billion euros worth of armaments to Kyiv, but this budget is almost exhausted, which makes further financing difficult without delays.
Ukraine’s ambassador to Germany, Oleksiy Makeev, emphasized the importance of ensuring “unimpeded implementation of planned orders and financing of additional aid in the new year”, calling for decisions on supplies to be made before possible early parliamentary elections.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Germany, Annalena Berbock, also advocated the continuation of the supply of weapons to Ukraine, reinforcing her position during a recent visit to Kyiv. In particular, it is about 812 reconnaissance drones from the company Quantum for the amount of 153 million euros. Burbock is pushing for the project to be funded in 2024 or early next year. If the funds are allocated from overspending in 2025, this will require additional approval from the budget committee, and the funding request has not yet been submitted to the Department of Finance.
This year, Germany has already provided Ukraine with 348 Vector reconnaissance drones, and another 127 are due to arrive by the end of the year. In addition, it is planned to supply about 4,000 combat drones from another German manufacturer, but the details of their type have not yet been disclosed.
In general, Germany provides significant military support to Ukraine. In October 2024, a new €600 million aid package was announced, including the IRIS-T SLM air defense system, tanks, howitzers and drones.
