There are chances for an end to the war in Ukraine in the coming months: Trudeau supported Scholz’s decision to talk with Putin

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau supported German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s decision to personally call Vladimir Putin, stressing that a certain level of interaction with the Russian president is necessary to end the war. It is reported Bloomberg.

However, this call caused a negative reaction from the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, who emphasized in a video message that Russia deserves complete isolation. According to him, Scholz’s call was exactly what Putin had longed for. As Bloomberg notes, some European officials also expressed disagreement with the German chancellor’s decision, arguing that it shows weakness and will not have a serious impact on Putin.

When Trudeau was asked about his take on Scholz’s call, he noted that an open channel of communication with Putin might make sense.

“We all understand how important it is to end violence in Ukraine and end conflicts in the world. This requires a certain level of interaction with colleagues with whom we often disagree.

It’s good that there are discussions around this, but the level of trust I feel in Vladimir Putin is probably at an all-time low right now.” Trudeau emphasized in Peru, where the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit was held.

Trudeau also emphasized Canada’s commitment to Ukraine’s victory and ending the conflict as soon as possible.

“There may be windows where that could happen in the coming months,” – he said, without going into details.

In addition, Trudeau noted:

“However, ending the conflict on Ukraine’s terms will require keeping the US on board when Donald Trump’s administration comes to power.

Let’s also be extremely frank: all the allies in the world will not be able to replace the complete rejection of support for Ukraine by the United States.”
