TikTok suspended activities in the US ahead of the ban

The popular social network TikTok stopped working in the United States shortly before the official ban on its use took effect. As reported CNN, it happened on the night of Sunday, January 19, 2025, local time.

After disabling the service, users were met with a message explaining the situation. The text stated that due to a law passed in the US, TikTok is temporarily unavailable to American users. It was also added that the company hopes for a quick solution to this issue and is working to resume operations in the country. The report noted that President-elect Donald Trump has expressed his willingness to find a solution to bring back TikTok after he takes office.

The ban on TikTok was made possible by the US Supreme Court’s ruling on Friday, January 17. The court rejected an appeal by the app’s owners, who argued that the ban violated the First Amendment to the Constitution, which guarantees freedom of speech. Thus, the court allowed the entry into force of the law prohibiting the operation of TikTok on the territory of the United States.

We will remind: the previous president, Joe Biden, decided not to take tough measures against TikTok, leaving this issue to the competence of his successor. At the same time, the TikTok company announced that it will allocate $50,000 to a holiday party in honor of Donald Trump’s inauguration to express gratitude to influencers who supported his election campaign.

Currently, TikTok remains temporarily unavailable in the US, and the company is working to restore the service, hoping for further negotiations with the new administration.
