Trump played golf with Finnish President Stubb and plans to buy icebreakers to strengthen US presence in the Arctic

President of Finland Alexander Stubb met with Donald Trump at his residence in Florida. The leaders held an informal conversation during a golf game at Mar-a-Lago, during which they discussed relations between Finland and the United States, current foreign and security policy issues, including Ukraine, and cooperation in the field of procurement and development of icebreakers. About this it is said in the press release of the Finnish government.

In his social network Truth Social, Trump wrote that the two presidents are determined to deepen cooperation between the United States and Finland, which involves “the purchase and joint development of a significant number of icebreakers that the United States now critically needs.”

“We look forward to deepening the partnership between the United States and Finland, in particular in terms of acquiring and creating a large number of icebreakers, which are extremely important for the security of both countries and stability in the world,” – Trump said.

Icebreakers play a key role in Trump’s plans to strengthen the American presence in the Arctic. His statement came a day after US Vice President JD Vance’s controversial visit to Greenland, a Danish-administered territory that Trump had previously openly sought to annex to the US.

The Finnish side also confirmed the fact of the meeting, clarifying that the visit to Trump was of a private nature and was not officially announced. It is worth noting that the day before Stubb received Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi in Helsinki to discuss Finland’s support for Kyiv.

The meeting in Florida took place against a background of diplomatic tension: a day earlier, US Vice President JD Vance made an unscheduled visit to Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark that, like Finland, is a key US ally in Northern Europe.
