UAE plans to create laws using AI

The United Arab Emirates could become the first country in the world to implement artificial intelligence to develop new laws and update existing legislation. About this informs Financial Times.
The UAE plans to involve AI in the law-making process, which will be the most ambitious initiative of this scale globally. According to Prime Minister Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the introduction of the new system will make the development of laws much faster and more accurate.
Last week, the government already approved the creation of a special body – the Office of Regulatory Intelligence, which will be responsible for the integration of AI into law-making processes. Artificial intelligence is expected to reduce the time it takes to create legislative initiatives by up to 70%.
For this, it is planned to create a large-scale database that will cover current federal and local legislation, court practice, as well as information from government services. AI will analyze these data sets to independently formulate proposals for legislative changes and predict their impact on the economy and society.
Researchers note that no other state has yet used artificial intelligence precisely for the active development and changes of laws. It is usually used as an auxiliary tool for analysis or optimization. At the same time, experts warn about possible risks. In particular, AI can generate unstable or contrived solutions, and its logic is sometimes incomprehensible to humans.
“While the idea looks promising, relying entirely on machines for legislation is dangerous.” — emphasizes Oxford researcher Vincent Straub.
