Ukraine rejects any alternatives to NATO membership: Foreign Ministry statement

On the day of the beginning of the NATO ministerial meeting, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine published an official statement regarding security guarantees that can be a means of deterring Russian aggression. The department emphasizes that she done on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the signing of the Budapest Memorandum.

The document states that Ukraine, having a negative experience with the Budapest Memorandum, will not agree to any “substitutes” or “surrogates” for membership in the Alliance.

“We are convinced that the only real guarantee of security for Ukraine, as well as a deterrent factor for further Russian aggression against Ukraine and other states, is only Ukraine’s full membership in NATO”, – emphasizes the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The agency called on the USA, Great Britain, France, China and other countries that participated in signing or supporting the Budapest Memorandum to provide political support for Ukraine’s invitation to NATO. This, as noted, will be a powerful countermeasure to Russian blackmail.

The statement also noted that Russia’s attack on Ukraine, which violated the 1994 accords, undermined global confidence in the idea of nuclear disarmament. This has led to increased nuclear ambitions in countries from the Indo-Pacific to Europe and the Middle East, posing additional threats to global security.
