Ukrainian scientists joined the search for beneficial bacteria in Antarctica

The National Antarctic Scientific Center of Ukraine became a participant in an international project aimed at cultivating unique Antarctic microorganisms. About this informs Ministry of Education and Science.

Ukrainian scientists will study the bacteria of the Southern Ocean to find useful compounds that can be used in the creation of medicines, cosmetics or super-resistant materials. Able to withstand extreme conditions such as ultra-low temperatures and ultraviolet radiation, these bacteria have significant potential for innovation.

Research will begin with the selection of samples near the Akademik Vernadskyi station, after which scientists will study their genome and properties in order to create a database of the most promising microorganisms. The best samples will be grown in the laboratory to obtain useful substances.

The EXPLORA project also involves the development of a robotic system that will allow collecting samples in Antarctic waters without human intervention. It is planned to be tested at the Akademik Vernadskyi station. 12 partners from different countries joined the program, including Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Germany and Bulgaria. The project started on December 1, 2024 and will last for four years.
