Vance met with the far-right candidate for chancellor of Germany

US Vice President J.D. Vance held a meeting in Munich with Alisa Weidel, the leader of the far-right Alternative for Germany party and a candidate for the position of chancellor. About this informs Spiegel.

According to spokeswoman Alisa Weidel, the conversation lasted about 30 minutes at a hotel in Munich where Vance was staying. The interlocutors raised the issue of the Russian Federation’s war against Ukraine and Germany’s domestic policy. The meeting between Vance and Weidel took place outside the Munich Security Conference, as the far-right of Germany was not invited there.

On the first day of the conference, the US vice president also met with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock, Christian Democrat chancellor candidate Friedrich Mertz and Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s associate Wolfgang Schmidt.

At the same time, Vance’s meeting and conversation with Chancellor of Germany Olaf Scholz will not take place within the framework of the conference.

“We don’t need to see him, he won’t be chancellor for long.” Vance’s team explained.
